The versatility of print technology for pattern design

Make It In Design

Following on from the successful textile partnership at multiple international print shows, Roland DG has partnered once more with Make it in Design and Rachael Taylor to display the compatibility between Roland DG’s print technology and Rachael’s own world-renowned pattern designs. Focusing a little closer to home, the latest collaboration was held at Roland DG’s HQ just south of Bristol, with multiple local designers taking the opportunity to attend and find out more about what Roland DG can offer their businesses.

Titled the ‘Make it in Design Designer’s Day’, multiple local pattern designers were invited into Roland DG’s Creative Centre to see with their own eyes the versatility and quality of what Roland DG’s technology could produce with just a few select patterns. Utilising the full strength of the Creative Centre, Joe Wigzell, Academy and Creative Centre manager, gave the designers a tour of the extent of applications that can be produced with Roland DG’s machines, from printers through to engravers and milling machines.

Sarah Lyons, Roland DG Head of Marketing, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Make it in Design team and their guests to the Roland DG Creative Centre. The event was a huge success with all of the designers in attendance excited by the number of applications that they could apply their surface pattern designs to. As a company our focus is on promoting our products to the wide network of professional printers in the UK & Ireland, but by working directly with potential customers of Roland DG technology owners, we were able to promote the flexibility of output to them, and help them overcome any nerves about trying something new. We of course have offered to put everyone in attendance in touch with Roland DG kit owners around the UK and can’t wait to see the results.”

Highlights of the day included the production of high-end ceramic patterned tiles, complete with embossing effects thanks to the VersaUV LEF-300’s gloss effects, and a patterned wrap on the Creative Centre’s Smart Car. Alongside this, designers were able to see the creation of various products, including impact engraved keyrings produced on the Metaza MPX-90 and the printing of Rachael Taylor’s floral patterns on transparent vinyl using the TrueVis VG-640; ideal for use on windows, walls and more.

Alongside the vibrant showcase, attendees were also given insight into how Roland DG’s RIP software technology, VersaWorks Dual, can be utilised with PANTONE colours to achieve an ideal print that translates perfectly from screen to substrate. With this sort of technology at the designer’s fingertips, it’s even easier for imagination to become reality.

Rachael Taylor Said; “I had such a wonderful time at the Roland DG office exploring lots of new and interesting applications for surface pattern design. I loved being able to share the day with designers from our Make it in Design community and take all we learnt back to share with those taking The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design e-course. It was fascinating to see how pattern design could be used with other Roland DG technologies, like their engravers and 3D milling machines, as well as their digital and textile printers. Watching a car being wrapped in one of my patterns was a particular highlight and seeing a number of my designs on ceramic tiles has sparked a new bathroom renovation project for me! I just want to say a huge thank you to the Roland DG team and especially to Joe Wigzell and Andy Dudley for hosting this creative session. We all went away feeling inspired and full of lots of crazy creative ideas!”
